Full-time, 35 hours/ week, Hybrid

Location: Vaughan, ON

Status: This position is to fill a new vacancy 

Salary Grade: 16 - $114,546 - $143,183 annually

Join Alectra as an Engineer, Distributed Energy Solutions where you will be responsible for supporting the distributed energy solutions (DES) development team through performing engineering and technical analysis, preliminary engineering design, and supporting the implementation and interconnection of various energy solutions such as wind energy systems, solar photovoltaic systems, natural gas generators, combined heat & power plants, energy storage systems, geothermal systems, microgrids, etc.

 

What you’ll do

 

  • Act as a primary resource for technical knowledge of energy generation and storage technologies including but not limited to wind turbines, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, natural gas (NG) generators, combined heat & power plants, battery energy storage systems (BESS), geothermal systems, microgrids, etc.
  • Provide technical analysis and preliminary conceptual design of energy solutions to support proposals in response to client’s RFPs.
  • Prepare various electrical design drawings such as site layouts, single line diagrams (SLDs), protection & control (P&C) diagrams, network diagrams, cable, and conduit schedules, etc.
  • Perform various steady-state, dynamic, and transient power systems studies such as power flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash hazard, power quality, stability, etc.
  • Oversee and support project interconnection process including: developing and submitting interconnection applications including CIA/SIA forms, site layouts, single line diagrams, equipment datasheets, operation/protection philosophies; overseeing and managing interconnection timelines and schedule; reviewing CIA/SIA study reports; evaluating system upgrade costs; and negotiating connection agreements with ISOs and utilities.
  • Review and provide technical inputs to various agreements with customers and suppliers such as power purchase agreements (PPA), master service agreements (MSA), equipment supply agreements (ESA), engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) agreements, and long-term service agreements (LTSA).
  • Provide technical oversight of EPC contractor teams, engineers and technical staff responsible for implementing projects through various phases of design and construction.
  • Perform engineering technical due diligence for equipment shop drawings (solar PV panel/optimizer, NG generator, BESS, transformer, switchgear, cable, etc.), design drawings (SLD, network diagram, P&C diagram, lighting diagram, grounding grid, site plan, etc.), study reports (power flow, short circuit, cable thermal ampacity, protection coordination, arc flash hazard, harmonics, contingency, grounding, lighting, etc.), and testing reports (FAT, SAT, commissioning, performance, etc.) delivered by suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Oversee various commissioning and performance tests performed by suppliers and contractors such as controller/relay settings, point-to-point communication, grid synchronization, dead/live zone direct transfer trip, remote dispatch, load following, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams within the organization or business partners such as business development, origination, development, finance, legal, project management, procurement, construction, and operation to develop and implement innovative energy solutions that support Alectra’s clients and shareholders.
  • Monitor, review and report on new technologies, industry trends, regulatory changes, ISO energy market rules, and interconnection processes that impact the development and implementation of energy solutions.
  • Retain strategic relationships with key stakeholders including ISOs, utilities, suppliers, contractors, and consultants.
  • Participate in relevant industry and government work groups and conferences to share knowledge, enhance brand awareness, and form potential partnerships.

  

 

Who you are

 

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Undergraduate Degree in Electrical Engineering, post-graduate degree an asset.
  • A registered member of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in good standing.
  • Deep technical knowledge of energy generation and storage technologies space including but not limited to wind turbines, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, natural gas (NG) generators, combined heat & power plants, battery energy storage systems (BESS), geothermal systems, microgrids, etc.
  • Knowledge of the electrical transmission and distribution systems and regulatory environment.
  • Knowledge of industry standards such as IEEE, CSA, IEC, NERC, NESC, UL, NFPA, etc.
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs such as CYME, ETAP, EASYPOWER, PSSE, PSCAD, PVsyst, AutoCAD, etc.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering and interconnection of various energy resources such as wind energy systems, solar photovoltaic systems, natural gas generators, combined heat & power plants, energy storage systems, microgrids, etc.
  • Significant experience in preparing electrical drawings and performing power systems studies.
  • Solid experience in preparing and filing electric utility interconnection applications.
  • Experience supporting energy project development process through feasibility, design, construction, commissioning and operations phases.

 

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Advanced problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to provide practical and/or innovative solutions to complex technical issues
  • Effective presentation and communication skills in a variety of formal presentation settings: one-on-one, small, and large groups, with customers, senior leadership team, peers, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading projects and managing project budgets, strategic planning and developing proposals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning, prioritizing, and executing multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in building and maintaining collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Hold a valid Driver’s License

  • Hybrid: This role is based in a hybrid environment, allowing for a mix of remote and in-office work to support team collaboration and business needs.

  • At Alectra, Compensation for non-union positions is determined within a defined salary range for each role. Placement within the salary range depends on several factors, including qualifications, relevant experience, and alignment with the role’s requirements.
