POSITION SUMMARY

Network Engineers ensure the stability, integrity and optimal performance of the systems which support the Company’s products and services. This will be achieved through completion of design initiatives, capital project creation, records maintenance, and supporting installation, maintenance, support, troubleshooting, and optimization of all fiber, copper, and wireless transport networks and associated hardware and software.

Outside Plant Engineers are responsible for the design activity related to outside plant cable and equipment including fiber, copper, cabinets, conduit, pole lines and any ancillary equipment.  Utilizes land base, subdivision plats, right of way drawings, civil designs and other types of drawings and data to determine best routing and correct facility placement to ensure that the facilities are properly sized and placed in the correct legal locations. Plans proper facility utilization by using cable records and population density counts to ensure proper cable sizing.  Ensures all facilities are either permitted properly by the correct government agency or that the appropriate private right of way is acquired. Provides design analysis to ensure best cost construction. Develop plans and alternatives when required.

Examples of Job Duties

All of the duties of a Network Engineer I and II, plus the following:

  • Provides recommendations (written reports when appropriate) in his/her area of authority and expertise

  • Performs technical design for network changes to existing or new hardware and software systems required to provide new functionality or enhance current performance and transition these changes to the operational environment

  • Mitigates the adverse impacts of service effecting issues on the business caused by network full or partial outages in the infrastructure and initiates actions to prevent recurrence of such issues

  • Proactively recommends and performs performance optimization activities to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of network resources

  • Performs risk management on a continual basis to ensure the identification and elimination of risks that can affect system availability, performance and reliability

  • Continually monitors the security of the network and ensures best practices have been implemented to thwart vulnerabilities of network attacks

  • Provides recommendations for new technology initiatives, standards and changes to the network or operating environment

  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required

Bachelors Degree in a technological field and 2 years relevant experience.  Bachelors Degree can be replaced by relevant experience on a year for year basis

Additional Requirements

Possess and maintain a valid Alaska Driver’s License

External applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment suitability assessment and a drug test.
