We are seeking a highly skilled Propulsion Engineer to join the Air Canada Maintenance (ACM) team. This position is responsible for in-service reliability, configuration management, cost control and process improvement. This position will also be responsible for the management of the maintenance program and configuration of the assigned aircraft engineering discipline.

This engineering job includes direct support to the operations, therefore travel and off hours support is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Review of aircraft and/or component out of service/performance, and identify root causes of failures and identify areas to improve performance, reliability and the passenger experience.
  • Support the Reliability Program by participating in the Reliability Working Group (RWG) and provide delay analysis (AOG, OOS, cancellations, ATB) and corrective action programs.
  • Review and provide initial assessment for Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives, and evaluate and prepare their cost/benefit analysis.  
  • Support the implementation of aircraft modification programs, special projects, and fleet acquisitions (ie. developing Engineering Instructions (EI) / Engineering Controls (EC) related to Service Bulletins and Airworthiness Directives). Support Fleet transactions and Project Engineering for new mandates.
  • Review, develop and obtain financial approvals for the implementation of Mandatory Airworthiness Requirements and Inspections/Instructions for Continuous Airworthiness.
  • Disseminate technical information through the implementation of fleet campaigns, EC’s, EI’s, etc.
  • Provide technical support, expertise and input to various internal and external parties (ie. Maintenance Operation Control (MOC), Technical Support, Line 
    Maintenance, Flight Operations, Airframe Maintenance, Maintenance Repair Organizations (MRO’s), Material Control, Planning, MEL Expeditors, etc.).
  • Establish technical, airworthiness and operational standards for propulsion systems including core engine and propulsion system line replaceable unit (LRU) components.
  • Develop ‘on-wing’ and ‘off-wing’ engine maintenance programs to ensure the propulsion system's performance meets customer and / or corporate objectives for cost and reliability.
  • Provide work scopes to the Maintenance Repair Organization (MRO) based on the off-wing maintenance program for individual engines as well as for associated components.
  • Interface with the MRO to follow and support the engines under repair at the MRO's facility.
  • Assist in developing engine maintenance budgets and monitor engine shop visits to ensure costs are controlled and budgets are met.
  • Act as technical liaison with engine manufacturers and other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM).
  • Assist with revisions to Minimum Equipment List (MEL) manuals as required.
  • Support the Maintenance Program team to enhance and optimize the Maintenance Program based on reliability data.
  • Participate and support any Air Canada AEO’s internal delegation (projects, STC’s, Minor and Major modification’s) as per TCCA requirements.
  • Represent Engineering during multidiscipline meetings and provide input in area of expertise.
  • Contribute to reduction of operational and maintenance cost by proactively identifying and implementing improvement opportunities in cost of ownership 
    through modifications, repair development and/or Maintenance Program optimization.
  • Prepare cost estimate, technical instructions and project evaluations on corporate initiatives, repair, improvements and new product design.
  • Collaborate with other team members to provide seamless engineering support across the fleet.
  • Monitor fleet performance through health monitoring tools, pilot reports maintenance defects and shop visit reports, making required changes in the 
    configuration or Maintenance Program in support of corporate objectives for cost and reliability.
  • Review, develop and obtain financial approvals for the implementation of Mandatory Airworthiness Requirements and Inspections/Instructions for Continuous 
    Airworthiness.
  • Manage aircraft and/or component configuration and maintenance specifications.
  • Maintain knowledge of Transport Canada regulations affecting area of expertise, and ensure compliance with evolving regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Design and develop engineering documentation in compliance with the applicable airworthiness standards with substantiation and justification for modification.
  • Preparation of repairs instructions, processes and procedures as required.
  • Consult with OEM’s and Transport Canada as required.
  • Participate in airworthiness investigations and support safety investigations of aircraft and components.
  • Provide on-site engineering support during off hours (overnight, weekend & holiday).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

     



  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering is an asset), or other technical discipline or equivalent.
  • Must be a member (or eligible) of a professional engineering association.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, with aviation industry experience an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral in English – French is an asset.
  • Team player with effective interpersonal skills and strong customer focus.
  • Pride in accuracy and good work presentation.
  • Self-starter requiring minimum supervision with good decision-making ability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to co-ordinate details to successful conclusion.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritization skills. Sound judgment and initiative.
  • Must be able to work independently, multi-task, work under pressure and accommodate changing priorities.
  • Solid knowledge of most commonly used PC software, including Office applications, MS Project.
  • Willingness to be on call and to work flexible hours when needed.
  • Willingness to travel for training, industry meetings, etc.
  • Must be clear of any restrictions which will prevent entry into other countries.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.

Assets:

  • In depth knowledge and relevant experience with aircraft propulsion systems.
  • A current or prior Transport Canada recognized delegation (DE521) in the powerplant specialty.
  • Knowledge of turbomachinery hardware and common repair techniques.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining aero engine maintenance programs, build specifications and repair orders (work scopes).
  • Experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting engine operational or performance issues.
