Working within Disability Management, the purpose of this role is to manage non-occupational employee disability claims. This role focuses on ensuring all employees are supported throughout the duration of their non-occupational disability with Care & Class. Disability Management Advisors apply consistent practices to facilitate employee recovery and return to safe & sustainable employment.

Responsibilities:

  • Ownership of assigned non-occupational disability claims from the onset to closure of the claim.
  • Prioritize and maintain workload to meet deadlines, company objectives and department standards.
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to manage complex cases and tasks under tight deadlines with multiple rapidly shifting/competing priorities.
  • Understand and consistently adhere to all mandatory Disability Management practices and procedures.
  • Ensure thorough understanding of applicable laws, regulations, disability best practice while always maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ensure all disability plan provisions and service level agreement requirements are met, and that timely correspondence is received from the insurers and documented on case files.
  • Initiate and maintain contact with the employee, disability insurance provider, branch contact, Occupational Health Services (as required) and any other relevant stakeholder throughout the duration of the claim.
  • Provide support and education on Air Canada Disability Management practices to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify early return to work opportunities and strategies that are unique to each claim, organize and lead case management meetings with the participation of relevant stakeholders, to develop return to work plans to ensure an employee is returned to work in their own or accommodated role, either temporary or long-term.
  • Responsible to acknowledge, prioritize and reply to voicemail, email communication, and maintain real-time documentation of each claim file.
  • Ability to identify, solve and manage non-medical barriers.
  • Actively participate in the development and execution of own and disability management objectives and process improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager, Disability Management.


  • Minimum of three (3) years direct disability case management experience with a disability insurer
  • Mature initiative-taker with ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to build and sustain meaningful relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Strong focus, task oriented, non-judgmental and understand clear boundaries/scope of practice
  • Strong analytical and critical decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others
  • Disability Management/Return to Work Certification (i.e., NIDMAR) an asset
  • Occupational Health Related Field (Ergonomist, Nursing, etc.) an asset
  • Experience of the aviation industry and its operations an asset
  • Intermediate personal computer skills, including keyboarding, navigation, data entry and experience with Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrate punctuality and dependability to support overall team success in a fast-paced environment.

Education

  • University degree an asset
  • Occupational Health Related Field (Ergonomist, Nursing, etc.) an asset
