Qualifications

The Role

Agilent is evolving its software portfolio from a set of standalone instrument-aligned applications into a unified, AI-enabled enterprise software platform that will serve as the digital foundation for our next generation of connected instruments, workflows, and services.

As Head of Software Engineering, you will lead engineering execution across this platform, encompassing instrument control, data acquisition, analysis, and shared services. You will lead the delivery of customer-facing scientific software such as Chromatography Data Systems (CDS), mass spectrometry software (e.g., MassHunter), and other lab-centric applications that directly enable our customers’ scientific workflows.

You will play a critical role in modernizing Agilent’s software architecture, driving engineering excellence, and embedding AI throughout the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Strategy & Execution

  • Own end-to-end software engineering for platform components and lab workflow software—spanning instrument control, data pipelines, scientific analysis, and shared services.
  • Translate enterprise software strategy into scalable delivery plans, engineering standards, and quality metrics.
  • Partner closely with Product, Architecture, Security, and R&D leaders to ensure tight alignment from roadmap to release.

Software Modernization

  • Drive the transition from legacy, monolithic architectures to modern, composable architecture.
  • Establish scalable best practices for API design, interoperability, and platform extensibility.
  • Ensure software portfolio meets high standards of reliability, performance, scalability and user experience.

AI-Enabled Engineering

  • Operationalize Generative AI and ML tools within the SDLC to improve developer productivity, code quality, and release velocity.
  • Set standards for responsible and effective AI usage across engineering teams.

Organizational Leadership

  • Lead and develop distributed, global engineering teams across regions and product lines.
  • Break down silos and drive consistency in engineering practices, tooling, and ways of working.
  • Build a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years  of progressive engineering leadership with experience in modular architectures for on-prem or cloud-based environments.
  • Proven experience leading large-scale modernization efforts in customer-facing software (e.g., CDS, mass spectrometry software, cell analysis platforms, or similar scientific software).
  • Deep understanding of modular, distributed architectures across on-prem, hybrid, or cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated success building and scaling high-performing engineering organizations in a matrixed, global setting.

The full-time equivalent pay range for this position is $282,240.00 - $441,000.00/yr plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
