About this role

About Aflac

While Aflac are a Fortune 500 U.S. company and one of the largest brands in the US and Japan, there is a very good chance you’ve not heard of us (yet). Here’s the deal: We help people cover medical expenses beyond their standard health insurance, and when they come to us they really need us. In Belfast, we are building great technology to support our customers in their time of need.

Using a variety of software technologies and AWS cloud to deliver core capabilities to our policyholders, makes it easy for our customers to interact with us, change policy information, submit claims – all from the device in their pocket or tablet, desktop or laptop all facilitated by in house-built API and AWS cloud data solutions. Our focus is on ensuring our customers can interact with us how they choose which is why we’re building an omni-channel experience to our policyholders, ensuring that their interactions with Aflac are as seamless as possible.

The intention is for our teams to continually adapt and reinvent their skills and capabilities over time as technologies change and evolve. We provide the right challenges and opportunities to enable your success, we want you to bring your enthusiasm, the ability to learn quickly, and to take minimum-viable-product technology to produce industrialised solutions for our enterprise. Once you have successfully delivered robust and scalable solutions in one area, there will be a new technology waiting to be explored.

The Role

We want Placement Software Engineers who get excited about new technologies, <!--StartFragment -->who leverage AI in a responsible way, increasing efficiency while maintaining control and understanding the output.<!--EndFragment -->
As part of our Agile teams, we will provide you with the training and the exposure to get you rapidly up to speed with our technologies and our data and present you with technology problems that influence how we are making things better for our customers. We might be looking at trends in the sales data from our agents who sell Aflac’s policies or using workflow automation to speed up how we process customer claims and get them the money they need as quickly as possible or building chatbots that provide a virtual assistant experience to our customers and help them in their time of need.

Ultimately, we want the solutions you will help build to provide data driven insights to our users, business partners and customers.
We adopt a lets try it! approach to problem-solving and will be incorporating new approaches that feed into our innovation strategy.
So whilst you will be challenged (in a positive way) we want you to bring your ideas and imagination  we want to hear from you.

What you'll be getting involved in:

  • Continually growing and developing your technical skills through self-learning, exposure to new projects, and being curious
  • Participating in daily stand-ups and contributing to an Agile development team that values the opinion of everyone in the team
  • Leveraging different software tools and technologies to build and test solutions for our stakeholders and partners in the US
  • Developing new features that will provide additional capabilities for our customers
  • Utilising a range of tools and technologies that vary depending on the product and the needs of the customer
  • Implementing unit testing and maximizing test automation, on all levels of code, as part of the SDLC
  • Solving complex problems alongside fellow team members

What we're looking for:

Essential:

  • <!--StartFragment -->You should be enrolled in a computing or software engineering related degree course such as Computer Science, Software Engineering or Computing and be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2.1 classification. <!--EndFragment -->
  • You should be eligible to live and work in the UK

Desirable:

  • Previous internship or experience in a Technology company

So that’s us. Thanks for taking the time to read this far! We look forward to hearing from you if you fancy joining an innovative tech company that runs locally but is supported by a well established, highly recognised Fortune 500 company in the US.
