Job Summary:

Supervises the pharmacists, support personnel, and operations of the department, including processes involved in and related to the purchasing, compounding, dispensing, clinical monitoring and distribution of all medications. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of assigned personnel using both professional and supervisory discretion and independent judgment.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Graduate of school of pharmacy: Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
  • Master's Degree: Preferred
  • Five years' technical experience: Preferred
  • Three years' Pharmacist experience in an acute care hospital: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Pharmacist license in the state of practice: Required

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with keeping and preserving of records on acquisition and disposition of prescription medications and controlled substances, and also those related to third party plans. Supervises dispersion of all narcotic drugs and in maintenance of a perpetual inventory. Assures prescribing is optimal (i.e. indication, dose, route, frequency, history of allergy). Clarifies routine drug orders by calling physicians to discuss dose, frequency and route and documents on appropriate forms.
  • Interprets medication orders (verbal and written) and transcribes to computerized patient medication profiles accurately. Prepares and dispenses medication orders per physician request according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Monitors drug therapy regimens for contradictions, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose.
  • Interviews, selects, hires, orients, instructs, trains, counsels, evaluates and disciplines staff. Participates in the development and presentation of orientation, education and training programs to the pharmacy, medical nursing and other staff.
  • Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective medication therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols. Provides drug information to patient and their families. Demonstrates an active concern for all customers (both external and internal) by responding to needs and expectations in a positive and exemplary manner.
  • Provides clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed. Understands and is compliant with organizational ethics, and adherence to policies and regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
