About this role

Location

Stålforskning 61, Sweden

R&D within Strategic Research at Alleima has generated extensive experimental data—particularly corrosion data for our corrosionresistant alloys—dating back to the 1960s. While data produced after the 1990s has been documented and stored digitally, earlier results exist only in paper format and have not yet been digitized.

Your role

Oxygen is an important element that forms various oxides with other different elements. These oxides may function either as protective surface layers or as constituents within the bulk material. In the present work, spinel oxide is crucial, and forms at the surface. Hence accurate microstructural measurements of the spinel oxide are necessary using (Wavelength Dispersive Spectrometer in EPMA) WDS / (Energy Dispersive Spectrometer in SEM, TEM & EPMA) EDS as well as phase identification in (X-ray Diffraction) XRD.

WDS needs suitable standards to measure the oxygen concentration and estimate the oxidation state of the oxides. These standards can be used as calibration standards to develop accurate matrix corrections. The present task involves synthesizing the spinel standards including NiO, Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 followed by developing a methodology in WDS (in EPMA) to measure accurate oxygen concentration and estimate the oxidation state.

In this work, variety of instruments such as XRD (for Phase identification), EPMA (for WDS- Quantification), SEM-EDS (for Microstructural and elemental analysis), and TEM will be used.

Your Profile

We are looking for a motivated and curious master’s student in the first or second year of their studies within Materials Chemistry, Geophysics, or Microscopy. You have a strong interest in materials-related challenges and are eager to develop your skills in a research- or development-oriented environment.

Experience or knowledge in heat treatment and the use of characterization techniques such as SEM, EPMA, and XRD is considered an advantage. You enjoy working both independently and as part of a team, and you have strong analytical skills with the ability to approach complex problems in a structured way. You are fluent in both Swedish and English, spoken and written, and can communicate your results clearly and effectively.

We place great emphasis on personal suitability. Most important is that you are the right person for the role; someone who is solution-oriented (problem solving), values collaboration, and is motivated to learn and contribute to shared goals. For the right candidate, there will also be an opportunity to carry out and write their Master’s thesis with us.

We offer a stimulating environment where you will have the opportunity to work with advanced materials characterization techniques and to further develop both your technical expertise and professional network.

Extent

The summer technology period covers 8 weeks and begins as soon as the studies are finished for the summer.

The position is based in Sandviken and requires on-site presence throughout the entire period, as the work involves hands-on heat treatment and microscopy We at Alleima can help with accommodation in Sandviken during this time that you work as a summer technologist, the selection will take place continuously during the application period.
