Job Description

The Project

ACCIONA has been selected to deliver Western Harbour Tunnel – Stage 2, Sydney’s third harbour crossing. The new Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) will connect to WestConnex at the Rozelle Interchange, cross underneath Sydney Harbour between Birchgrove and Waverton, and connect with the Warringah Freeway near North Sydney.

Project scope includes:

  • Construction of approximately 4.8 kilometres of mainline tunnels with three lanes in each direction
  • Civil, Mechanical and Electrical fitout of Stage 1 and Stage 2 tunnels
  • Surface level work, including on and off ramps and tie-in work to the Warringah Freeway

The Opportunity

The Electrical Engineer will play a key role in supporting the delivery, maintenance, and operation of electrical systems for a slurry Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) project in Sydney. This position involves ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all TBM electrical components and systems in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and local regulations. 

Key accountabilities for the position:

  • Oversee installation, testing, and commissioning of TBM electrical systems including power distribution, control panels, PLCs, and instrumentation. 
  • Develop, review, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and single-line drawings. 
  • Monitor and troubleshoot TBM electrical faults to minimize downtime and ensure continuous operation. 
  • Coordinate with mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems teams for integrated system functionality. 
  • Support procurement and evaluation of electrical equipment and materials. 
  • Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), and project-specific requirements. 
  • Conduct inspections, risk assessments, and preventive maintenance on all electrical installations. 
  • Maintain as-built documentation and prepare technical reports detailing electrical performance and maintenance activities. 
  • Liaise with contractors, equipment suppliers, and the client’s engineering team to resolve technical issues. 

Required Skills and Competencies

Capability & Experience you will need to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. 
  • Prior experience in electrical engineering, preferably in tunnelling, mining, or heavy industrial environments. 
  • Experience with TBM or large rotating machinery electrical systems highly desirable. 
  • Strong understanding of Australian electrical standards (AS/NZS 3000, AS 60204) and Work Health & Safety regulations. 
  • Competent in PLC systems (Siemens/Allen Bradley), SCADA interfaces, and variable speed drive (VSD) systems. 
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and produce electrical schematics and documentation. 
  • Current NSW electrical license (or eligibility) preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills. 
  • This position involves site-based work, including shift rotations and weekend availability during critical TBM operations.
