Zoo Maintenance Worker

Milwaukee County Zoo

Hourly Pay Range: $21.30 - $31.92

Job Summary: The Zoo Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining and repairing the buildings, equipment, and grounds of the zoo. This position performs in a wide range of maintenance tasks, including basic repairs, preventative maintenance, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC. The Zoo Maintenance Worker will also have a strong attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Repair and maintain Zoo structures, equipment, and enclosures by changing lights, belts, and filters, and cleaning, greasing, and lubricating when applicable. Repair walls, doors, locks, windows, and screens. Complete minor electrical and plumbing repairs. Monitor HVAC equipment and maintain records.
  • Fabricate, design, and build crates, cages, and fencing. Alter the function of equipment to construct shelving, carts, furniture, props, etc.
  • Assist with animal moves and skilled trades.
  • Send and receive emails and work orders. Use the zoo’s learning management system for trainings.
  • Restore parts of the Zoo using skills such as carpentry, painting, roofing, drywall, etc.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current resident of Wisconsin.
  • Possession of a Wisconsin Driver’s License, able to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of work experience in the building trades or as a facilities or maintenance worker.
  • Able to lift/carry up to 50lbs and push/pull up to 100lbs.
  • Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, and shift rotations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training in the building trades.

 

 

NOTE:  This original application is open to permanent residents of the state of Wisconsin at the time of application. In accordance with Section 11, Rule 3 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of criteria deemed appropriate by the Director of Human Resources.
