Public Safety Officer

Full-time, Hourly

Hourly Range: $16.87 – $25.31

 Job Summary: 

The Public Safety Officers provide security for those who work, visit and conduct business inside the Milwaukee County Courthouse, Safety Building, Criminal Justice Facility and the Vel R. Phillips Youth & Family Justice Center. All who enter these facilities are required to either show a valid form of work identification or be vetted by the security officers. This position is vital to keeping a safe environment for the mentioned facilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate Facility Screening Stations - Officers ensure citizens enter though the security stations.  All citizens properly must go through a magnetometer and be inspected by the officers.  Officers also use handheld metal detectors to ensure citizens are not bringing in any prohibited items inside the facilities.
  • Contact With Citizens Entering the Facility - Security Officers assist citizens with directions around the facilities as well as the expected behavior inside these facilities. 
  • Building Sweeps - Sweep the building after closing time to ensure all doors to the outside are properly secured and any citizens who no longer have business inside the building are walked out.
  • Emergency Response - Officers are trained to contact the Sheriff's Office in the event of emergencies including medical emergencies.  Officers are trained in CPR.
  • Use of Equipment, Tools & Materials – Operate computers, X-Ray magnetometer with conveyer belt, and handheld metal detectors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education, License/Certification and Experience

  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin required.
  • High School diploma or GED required.

 

Preferred Experience/Education:

  • Military, Security or Law Enforcement experience preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to lift, carry, push and pull 10 lbs.; knowledge of security practices and procedures; oral and written communication skills; ability to take prompt and decisive action in an emergency situation; ability to use a computer to write reports; ability to work well under stress; ability to operate a two-way radio; ability to understand and follow both written and oral directions; and ability to work effectively and harmoniously with employees and the general public.
