Summary

Under the direction of and in collaboration with Department Director, this position is accountable for promoting high quality patient care through efficient and effective management of the Operating room, preop, postop phase II, recovery, surgery scheduling, registration clerks and preop clinic nurses. Assuming twenty-four (24) hour responsibility for department operations; planning, organizing, and directing unit activity. This also includes responsibility for patient care programs, policy and procedures, evidence-based nursing standards of patient care, and compliance with Washington State Nurse Practice Act.

Maintains sound organizational relationships and shared decision making with nursing and ancillary and support staff, physicians, Confluence Health leadership and administration, as well as departmental stakeholders. Helps develops, implements, and evaluates long and short-term goals with realistic key performance indicators for assigned departments. Responsible for directing, planning, and facilitating process improvement in a safe, consistent environment that promotes quality care and optimal patient outcomes within the constraints of available resources. On an ongoing basis, evaluates that nursing care is implemented via the Nursing Process and the Confluence Health Practice Model.

 

Position Reports To: Director of Perioperative Services 


Essential Functions

  1. Promotes a professional, team-based environment throughout department and with all other departments within Confluence Health. Serves as a consultant, mentor and role model to staff.

  2. Collaborates with Charge Nurses and staff on all shifts to ensure delivery of high-quality patient care.

  3. Collaborates with physician staff on patient care and operational issues. Provides support to physician staff to enhance quality of patient care.

  4. Performs Leadership round within the units to evaluate care provided and patient satisfaction.

  5. Responsible for patient and environmental safety and ensures correction, if necessary.

  6. Responsible for patient care in preop, postop phase II, PACU and the OR to ensure standards of practice.

  7. Skills and knowledge in all areas of perioperative services to understand the flow of patient care and provide assistance when needed at the bedside.

  8. Proactively identifies staffing levels according to defined position specifications to ensure appropriate staffing effectiveness and established standards. Ensures department schedule is completed per contract guidelines and meets core staffing needs.

  9. Establishes and monitors service and performance standards for departmental functions. Designs, directs, and implements actions to continuously improve quality.

  10. Participates/implements improvement projects focused on achievement of annual goals and CHVS initiatives, ensure implementation of and adherence to improvement changes.

  11. Participates in patient and employee satisfaction monitoring and improvement processes.

  12. Ensures payroll is complete and accurate. Assists the Department Director in development and monitoring of operating and capital budget and assists with variance analysis if applicable. Will act as an active member of the management team to support the patient care delivery model, standards of nursing practice, legal regulations, and hospital policies.

  13. In collaboration with Director, develops and implements unit goals that support the hospital's strategic goals, programs, policies, and procedures that guide and support the provision of service and recognized Nursing Standards of Practice.

  14. Assists Department Director in ensuring all accreditation standards are met on an on-going basis.

  15. Responsible for hiring, supervision and performance evaluation of licensed and unlicensed staff in collaboration with Department Director.

  16. Assists Department Director with on-going counseling and progressive discipline ensuring compliance with hospital policies and collective bargaining agreements.

  17. Adheres to Confluence Health and Central Washington Hospital/Wenatchee Valley Hospital policies and unit standards as applicable.

  18. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

  19. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN with 4 years recent/relevant experience or bachelor's degree in a healthcare related field and 4 years recent/relevant management experience or earns BSN within two years of hire.
  • Six years of OR experience and experience in at least one other area in perioperative services (Preop or PACU), i.e., nurse, charge nurse, nursing supervisor, nurse manager.
  • Computer skills related to Microsoft products – Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point.
  • Current licensure in the state of Washington (RCW 18.88) or licensure through Multistate Nurse Licensure Compact (SSB 5499).
  • Certified Perioperative Nurse, CNOR (Must obtain within 2 years and maintain).
  • American Heart Association CPR.

Desired:

  • Master's Degree.
  • CPAN, Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse or CAPA, Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse.
